Chapter 13
Yolanda
After learning that RJ was hospitalized, Valerie was finally convinced that something was going on with RJ in that house. Iâve been telling her ever since the first visit that I felt that something wasnât right, and I even told her as well as the caseworker about the bruise on his cheek and what appeared to be a burn mark on his forehead that I noticed the next visit, but Nieshaâs explanation about how heâs always running around and falling down seemed to have made sense to both of them, but not me, I was still skeptical. RJ was clingier with that visit than he was at any visit before, and he didnât speak at all
âBaby, you ready?â Mike asked as he entered the room and grabbed his wallet and keys off of the table.
âYes, Iâm ready,â I answered, âRemember we have to go pick up Valerie first. I want her to come with us so that she could see that Iâm not exaggerating. I want her to see RJ for herself,â I continued as I slid on my shoes.
Mike walked over to me and sat down beside me. He placed his arm around my neck and pulled me close to him laying my head on his shoulder.
âYolanda, I know youâre worried, and I am too, but you got to try to let it go for now. We will find a way to help RJ.â
âHow? Iâve reported the bruises on RJ to his caseworker as well as his demeanor, and all she said was that she'd look into it. Her idea of looking into it was asking Niesha what happened, are you kidding me?â
âI know, and she stood by Nieshaâs explanation that he fell, but what else can we do?â
âWe can fight for him. No matter how hard, we fight.â
âWhat do you think we are doing? We visit him, and we have reported our concerns; we are doing our part, now we have to let the social worker do hers, we have to let her do her job.â
âIs she really gonna do her job, Mike? This is his fourth caseworker in three years. It seems as if they just keep passing him around to workers and no one is really taking his situation serious. Iâm telling you they arenât ready to be his parents, they arenât treating him properly. You see how clingy he was, and how sad he looked. That wasnât just because he missed us, heâs unhappy. Thatâs my son, and I know him.â
âI agree with you, but what can we do? Itâs only been two visits so far, heâs only been back with his parents for a few weeks. The caseworker feels that itâs an adjustment period for us all. Maybe it is, maybe today we will see differently, maybe he just had to get used to being with his parents. Letâs just go to our visit today and see whatâs going on.â
âThatâs too many maybes for me, Mike. RJ is a friendly child, you know that.
