Chapter 13

Yolanda

After learning that RJ was hospitalized, Valerie was finally convinced that something was going on with RJ in that house. I’ve been telling her ever since the first visit that I felt that something wasn’t right, and I even told her as well as the caseworker about the bruise on his cheek and what appeared to be a burn mark on his forehead that I noticed the next visit, but Niesha’s explanation about how he’s always running around and falling down seemed to have made sense to both of them, but not me, I was still skeptical. RJ was clingier with that visit than he was at any visit before, and he didn’t speak at all

“Baby, you ready?” Mike asked as he entered the room and grabbed his wallet and keys off of the table.

“Yes, I’m ready,” I answered, “Remember we have to go pick up Valerie first. I want her to come with us so that she could see that I’m not exaggerating. I want her to see RJ for herself,” I continued as I slid on my shoes.

Mike walked over to me and sat down beside me. He placed his arm around my neck and pulled me close to him laying my head on his shoulder.

“Yolanda, I know you’re worried, and I am too, but you got to try to let it go for now. We will find a way to help RJ.”

“How? I’ve reported the bruises on RJ to his caseworker as well as his demeanor, and all she said was that she'd look into it. Her idea of looking into it was asking Niesha what happened, are you kidding me?”

“I know, and she stood by Niesha’s explanation that he fell, but what else can we do?”

“We can fight for him. No matter how hard, we fight.”

“What do you think we are doing? We visit him, and we have reported our concerns; we are doing our part, now we have to let the social worker do hers, we have to let her do her job.”

“Is she really gonna do her job, Mike? This is his fourth caseworker in three years. It seems as if they just keep passing him around to workers and no one is really taking his situation serious. I’m telling you they aren’t ready to be his parents, they aren’t treating him properly. You see how clingy he was, and how sad he looked. That wasn’t just because he missed us, he’s unhappy. That’s my son, and I know him.”

“I agree with you, but what can we do? It’s only been two visits so far, he’s only been back with his parents for a few weeks. The caseworker feels that it’s an adjustment period for us all. Maybe it is, maybe today we will see differently, maybe he just had to get used to being with his parents. Let’s just go to our visit today and see what’s going on.”

“That’s too many maybes for me, Mike. RJ is a friendly child, you know that.
